Senior cornerback Jonathan Higle prepares for an upcoming snap during their home game against the Mt. Zion Bulldogs last Friday. The Panthers steamrolled Mt. Zion 35-0 their first victory of the season. In this game, a new name rose to prominence in style, and the defense stayed strong against a crafty scrambler. Unlike most Starr’s Mill games, it was the opponent that was taking control of the game clock while the Panthers coasted with rapid-fire rushing touchdowns.

Senior running back Devin Barnett celebrates a touchdown with senior tackle Joseph Rampey and junior running back Brandon Mathis during their home game against the Mt. Zion Bulldogs. Barnett took the ball in five carries for 134 yards and three touchdowns. The Panther offense as a whole put together 294 yards of offense in only about 17 and a half minutes of possession time.

Junior catcher Ashley Sikes (left) and junior pitcher Lilli Backes (right) converse with each other during game one of their double header at Whitewater versus the Lady Wildcats. In an atypical performance from Starrs Mill, the Lady Panthers staggered and stumbled in a 2-0 sweep. The loss puts them out of the top four teams in the region, putting their postseason contention in jeopardy in what is a new low for Starr’s Mill. Through the double header, Backes gave up 16 runs in an unusual performance from the star pitcher.

Junior Joy Johnson serves the ball. Starrs Mill hosted the Southside Invitational against three other teams. The Panthers won both matches against East Coweta and Carrollton, but lost to Trinity. “If we have confidence beating someone, a bigger school or a higher region, it gives us confidence in our region,” head coach Jason Flowers said.

Sophomore quarterback Will Yarbrough lines up under center for the snap during the Panthers’ season opener against the East Coweta Indians. The tight contest last Thursday proved that the Panthers were coming to play, despite falling short in a 21-20 loss. The offense showed promise, the defense stayed beyond reputable, and the culture of grit proved itself as strong as ever.
