Farmers Insurance selected junior guard Alyssa Angelo from the varsity girls’ basketball team as the fourth winter sports Player of the Week. Angelo has contributed to a Lady Panthers’ team that’s off to 6-1 start this year.
“[Angelo] works hard,” head coach Emily Sweeney said. “She always gives 100 percent.”
Angelo is averaging 6.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game this season. She has made major contributions to a vastly improved Starr’s Mill team. On Dec. 5, the Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Chiefs at McIntosh, the first time anyone on the current Starr’s Mill roster has done so.
Twenty-one of the 22 teams at Starr’s Mill made the state playoffs last year, with girls’ basketball being the exception, but Angelo and the others are on a mission to prove this year’s team should be taken seriously.
“Our season is going great so far,” Angelo said. “Before every game I try to remind myself that I’m blessed to even play this game.”
