Who is the better artist: Kanye West or Taylor Swift?

January 28, 2022

In 2009, Taylor Swift was on stage accepting a VMA award for Best Female Video. During her speech, Kanye West went on stage and took the microphone from her. He proceeded to announce to the crowd that while he was “happy” for Swift, she was not deserving of it and the award should have been given to Beyonce. West was then booed off the stage. This cruel interaction sparked the great Taylor vs. Kanye debate.

Read below as Editor Abi Carter and Staff Writer Charlie Goins take sides on a long-standing question in the music industry: Who is the better artist?

Kanye West

Kanye West is far from perfect, but arguably better than Taylor Swift.

Kanye Omari West, born June 8, 1977, was born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago. Not only a rapper, he’s a record producer and a fashion designer. He first gained recognition through Roc-A-Fella in the early 2000s, producing hit singles before Swift hit puberty.

Pursuing a solo career as a rapper, he released his first solo album “The College Dropout” in 2004. The album was a commercial success, along with every album to follow. Kanye experiments with diverse elements like orchestra music, synthesizers, and autotune. None of his songs sound the same, but the same cannot be said for Swift.

Regarding the original conflict of Sept. 13, 2009, Kanye publicly apologized for embarrassing Taylor Swift on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards. Six years later, she presented him the prestigious Video Vanguard Award, saying she was a fan of his since she was 12. Before that, Swift modeled his clothes for the Australian fashion spread, “Harper’s Bazaar.” Obviously, the beef was short-lived.

Kanye’s albums all have different meaning and sound, like the underlying darkness of fame in “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” (2010) and choosing between the sinful life or family and religion in “The Life of Pablo” (2016).

His newest album, “Donda,” is a tribute to his mother’s passing due to coronary heart disease. She struggled with post-op issues with her liposuction and mammoplasty. Soon after the album’s release, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the “Donda West Law,” legislation making it mandatory for patients to get medical clearance through physical examination before any plastic surgery.

“Ye,” West’s album released in 2018, was his eighth consecutive album to debut No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200. The album is a description of Kanye’s psyche, addressing his bipolar disorder and suicidal thoughts. In the song “Violent Crimes,” he opens up about his fear of parenting his daughter, North. West presents himself as flawed, making the listening experience raw and relatable without constantly mentioning a breakup with a boy.

Kanye’s talent, charitability, and relatability to his audience cannot be ignored.

In every album he has produced, supported, and featured smaller artists to raise their popularity. These include Kid Cudi, Pusha T, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Frank Ocean, The Game, and Rick Ross. He works well with others and is a charitable donor, giving $2 million to support the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. He also created the Kanye West Foundation to help disadvantaged youth excel in school and extracurriculars.

Kanye’s talent, charitability, and relatability to his audience cannot be ignored. Along with growing as a producer and an artist, he is growing as a person. He documents his life through his music, allowing his audience to take a deeper journey with their favorite artist.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift has proven time and time again through her songwriting and hard work that she is the most talented artist in the world today.

She is commonly referred to as “The Music Industry,” and I cannot think of a better way to describe her.

She has released 196 songs either as a solo or featured artist. With the addition of re-recordings, writing credits, features, singles, and movie soundtracks, Swift has over 300 songs under her name. Her success does not stop there.

These tracks have earned her 435 awards, including 11 Grammys. She has set or broken numerous records. Her most recent feat is the release of three albums in one year, each of which reached No. 1, something that only The Beatles have accomplished.

When it comes to her brilliant song writing, Swift is able to bottle up any emotion and put it into words. Getting over a breakup? Driving in the car with friends? She’s got a song for that.

I believe that it is not only her beautiful vocals and catchy melodies that made her popular, but her ability to tell stories and connect with listeners set her apart from her “competition.” She has been playing guitar from the age of ten, and since then has learned to play piano, ukulele, and the banjo. She is, simply put, a musical genius.

Through the use of of figurative language and poetic lyrics, Swift is able to leave listeners in contemplation even after the song has ended. Not only do her songs leave a lasting impression, but also her theatrical stage presence.

Swift and Kanye reportedly made amends after the 2019 incident at the VMAs, but it was not until seven years later that the drama resurfaced. In February 2016, Kanye West performed “Famous,” which includes the lyric, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that bitch famous.”

This provocative line shocked Swift’s fan base, including Swift herself. A video was later released of West and Swift talking over the phone prior to the release of the song, in which West asked is he could include the lyric saying they “might still have sex.” Swift gave him permission and thanked him for asking her first. However, there was no mention of calling her “that bitch” or asking for her consent to video the phone call. A look alike of Swift was featured in the music video “Famous,” nude and in bed with Kanye. Fans took sides, articles were written, and the friendship between West and Taylor ended.

In 2019, Scooter Braun, an infamous music and entertainment executive, bought Big Machine Record Group, Swift’s previous record label. With this purchase, Braun received ownership of her premiere album, “Taylor Swift”, through “reputation”. This was a major stab in the back for Swift. She believed that Braun was responsible for the majority of the Kanye West drama due to the fact that he was West’s manager at that time.

Swift has since made the decision to re-record the albums that Braun owns so that her hard work will be under her name, not his. While this may seem like an easy feat, it is a large amount of songs for her to re-record. In addition to the original songs on the album, she is also releasing songs “from the vault,” never-before-heard songs that were originally on the album, but were ultimately removed. Swift could’ve easily let Braun win, but after years and years of hard work, she deserved to have those songs under her name.

Swift has proven time and time again that she is a step above her competitors, including West. Although she has not been in the industry for as long as he has, she has used her time incredibly well influencing and telling stories to fans around the world.
