Tim Monihan and Farmers Insurance recognize freshman soccer player Ava Slater as the sixth Player of the Week for the spring sports season.
“[Being Player of the Week] means a lot,” Slater said. “I’m proud of the hard work I’ve put in.”
Slater is a huge asset to the team, not just offensively, but defensively as well.
“She never lets up,” head coach John Bowen said. “Everybody loves going forward. Everybody loves scoring goals. That’s never a problem, but mentally she has the tenacity to turn right around if we lose the ball, she’s immediately on top of it.”
Slater is first on the team in assists with 14 assists, third on the team in goals scored with 13 goals this season. She is second overall on the team points with 40 points.
“What’s most impressive about her is her defensive presence because she’s more of an attacking creative player,” Bowen said. “She creates goals, gets assists, all of that, but her ability to just spin and transition the ball, win the ball right back, and then give it to us in good parts of the field contributes to us being able to score goals quickly.”
Starr’s Mill defeated Dutchtown last night, 10-0. The Lady Panthers are 11-4 overall and already secured first place in the region without giving up a single goal in region play all season.
The Lady Panthers play at Harrison High School on April 13.
