Chrissy Costanza is the lead singer of the alternative-pop band Against the Current. Costanza tends to switch between her head voice and chest voice frequently in her songs. The band has written songs for the online game “League of Legends” and even a song for the popular anime, “My Hero Academia.”

Against the Current

Against the Current is one of those bands that fit into several different genres. The diverse vocals and instrumentals in their songs could categorize the overall sound as either rock, pop-punk, alt-pop, or even synth-pop.

The varying styles of music are thanks to the front-woman and lead singer Chrissy Costanza. Costanza, only 25 years old, has a distinct and powerful voice that travels across many genres.

In the band’s first album, “In Our Bones,” the vocals range from belting pop-punk on songs like “Running With The Wild Things” to soft and sweet in songs like “In Our Bones.” The control Costanza has over her voice is absolutely insane and never fails to send chills down my spine.

My personal favorite song by the band is “Blood Like Gasoline.”

“Blood Like Gasoline” has an eerie sound to it with intense drums and a quiet guitar riff. A soft, melodic keyboard can be heard in the song’s intro, building up throughout the verses with Costanza’s soft voice. As the chorus approaches, Costanza begins to belt the lyrics, and the drums and guitar quicken in pace.

The lyrics of the song describe the mental tolls a toxic romantic partner can have on a person. The lines “Your lips like fire/ And my blood like gasoline,” paints a graphic image of the unhealthy behaviors of a toxic relationship.

“Lips like fire” refer to the toxic person’s way of manipulation, egging their partner on to get their way. The closing line of the song, “Cause baby your lips like fire/ left burns all over me,” is attributed to the mental, and sometimes even physical, scars a toxic partner can leave on a person.

The song is an incredibly powerful ballad that describes the efforts of taking back control of your life after being manipulated by someone who was supposed to love you.

Chrissy Costanza, aside from pursuing music, is an avid streamer on Twitch. She even has her own show on Venn.tv titled “Guest House,” which airs weekly.

“Guest House” gives Costanza a creative outlet during the unique conditions courtesy of COIVD-19. On her talk show, Costanza is able to play video games, talk about social issues, interview rising stars, and chat with her friends and family.

Chrissy Costanza has built her reputation up from the ground. Coming from a small Italian family in New Jersey to writing and producing pop-punk music for the whole world to indulge in is a huge accomplishment for Costanza.
