After more than three decades of dedication to teaching, math teacher Michelle Genovese is retiring from Starr’s Mill. She is closing a chapter in her career while keeping the door open for future opportunities.
“I absolutely love teaching, and I love math,” Genovese said.
That passion guided her through her college years, where she earned a dual degree: a bachelor of music and bachelor of science, and became certified to teach both subjects.
A scholarship in music helped support her education, but it was math that she ultimately chose to teach.
Her teaching journey began at Sandy Creek High School, where she taught for 21 years. She then moved to Starr’s Mill High School for the final nine years of her career.
“There is no branch of mathematics, however abstract, which may someday not be applied to the phenomenon of the real world,” Genovese said.
As she prepares to retire, she notes she will especially miss teaching statistical reasoning and geometry, the current subjects that she teaches. She also expressed appreciation for her students.
Looking ahead, she plans to break in her year of retirement. While she was offered a job at a private school, she turned it down for now. She has not ruled out the possibility of tutoring in the future.
“I’ll miss the students most,” Genovese said.
