For the past three years, Benson Boone has gone from just another “American Idol” audition to one of the biggest pop artists of this generation. Releasing two studio albums with over 97 songs he has really asserted himself in the music world.
Within all these songs, his main genre has tended to be bubblegum pop rock. While on his current “American Heart Tour” he has performed surprise songs widening the eyes of many to the question of if he is in the wrong genre.
In the beginning, Boone wrote contemporary pop music, a genre including mixing different genres like rock, pop, indie. As he moved forward in his career Boone transitioned to bubble gum pop rock including music to dance to with catchy tunes to sing along with a sprinkle of rock characteristics with his big vocals.
Now he is still going strong but on a different path. On his newest album, “American Heart,” deeper, more meaningful songs are still evident, such as “Momma Song,” but they get brushed over with his upbeat, catchy tunes that engulf the album like “Mystical Magical” or “Mr. Electric Blue.”
So far in his career Boone has only gone on two official tours both which turned into world tours spanning around 11 countries. He has also performed at the 2025 Grammys in September and Coachella last April. Each show has brought a new light to his career along with his extravagant personality, looks, and performances.
Surprise songs have become a popular addition to many artists’ concerts starting most notably with Taylor Swift on her “Eras Tour” doing one of her own songs, then Sabrina Carpenter on her “Short and Sweet Tour” with an opportunity of four cover songs by different artists.
Boone is no different. He has fully jumped on this train and is leaving jaws dropped each night making any song out there an option on his current “American Heart Tour.” Not only does this leave the audience in suspense but it helps showcase his strong vocal skills and talent while many of his fans only come for his extravagant acrobats and sparkly jumpsuits.
So far he has played many different types of songs from alternative rock “Sparks” by Coldplay, alternative/indie “When We Were Young” by Adele, folk-pop “Shallow” by Lady Gaga, and country song “Cover Me Up” by Jason Isbell.
When he first started making music Boone took a more soft but powerful tone with quiet verses leading into bigger more raw choruses really telling a story. This is evident in his first two songs “Ghost Town” and “In the Stars,” which both provide sounds more focused on heartbreak and the messages.
Since hearing all of these songs, the question has been brought up if Benson Boone is in the wrong genre. Although his most recent songs have gotten lots of love because of their fun tunes, those hits have strayed away from his natural gifts. His older releases along with the surprise songs have brought a new light to his talent.
Fans from all over the world are finally getting a glimpse into the real abilities of Boone. Haters are now able to get a different perspective on him as a musician once all the extravagance is taken out of the mix.
For now, Boone is getting to do the thing he loves and awe his fans every night. No one knows where these songs may take him. It is only a matter of time.
