Sophomore Alice Klimko has been listening to “I Don’t Wanna Be Me” by Type O Negative.

“I heard about Type O Negative from my friend and then I was just listening to songs by [them],” Klimko said. “It was on shuffle so I just came across it.”
“I Don’t Wanna Be Me” is a hard, punk/gothic rock song that describes the vocalist’s anger with where his life is at. What attracts people is the song’s unique mix of genres, including punk rock, gothic metal, thrash, and power pop, as well as the band’s instrumentation.
“Halfway through, the guitar solo, it’s really good,” Klimko said. “I don’t know how to describe it.”
The band’s guitarist Kenny Hickey says that the lyrics were autobiographical, saying that frontman Peter Steele was getting sick of his addictions and his life. The song is also fairly different from the rest of their discography, which was in response to Hickey’s frustration with the usual complex gothic metal they did.
“I Don’t Wanna Be Me” was released as a promo single for the album “Life is Killing Me” in 2003. It peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Active Rock chart and is currently the band’s most streamed song on Spotify with over 145 million streams.
“I Don’t Wanna Be Me” is available on all major streaming platforms.
