“Bobby James” by N.E.R.D perfectly describes the struggle of being at rock bottom, with no one who understands or wants to understand what you are going through. In “Bobby James,” N.E.R.D unpacks the idea of being bullied and trying to cope through the pain.
Despite the song’s sad but truthful message, N.E.R.D uses an upbeat track with different elements of funk, rock, and electronic style beats. The song is energetic and a little edgy, giving the listener a sense of uneasiness.
The repeating line “Every day at school all my classmates call me names/And so, this pusher introduced me to this thing/He said it makes you forget pain but makes you sing,” gives context to why and how the main character, Bobby James, got hooked on drugs.
N.E.R.D uses the chorus to show what happened to Bobby James after he started using drugs excessively. The line, “hey there mister give me some cash, I’m high as hell and I’m ready to blast/I’m just one hit away from being passed out, young and assed out,” implies that Bobby James is struggling with homelessness and drug abuse, being truly at rock bottom.
The chorus is sung by two contrasting voices. The first voice is a woman who sounds happy and carefree. The second voice is Pharrell who is pleading with the listener for help. Both voices are representations of how people often cope with hitting rock bottom. Either admit that you have a problem and start to feel sorry for yourself, or ignore the issue entirely and pretend everything is okay. N.E.R.D does this in a way to show that both methods are depressing and equally problematic.
I chose this song because my dad has recently introduced me to the band N.E.R.D and this is my favorite song. The song has really stuck out to me for having such an important message in an upbeat and catchy song.
“Bobby James” is a part of N.E.R.D. ‘s album “In Search Of…” that was released in 2001. Before being disbanded, N.E.R.D was made up of Chad Hugo, Shay Haley, and Pharrell Willams.
