Starr’s Mill welcomes English teacher Chris Salas to the Panther family. This is her 18th year teaching.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in rhetoric and communications from Mercer University
  • Master’s degree in teaching from Mercer University
  • Specialist’s degree in leadership from Mercer University

Background

  • Previously taught at Whitewater High School and was the department chair
  • Previously taught British literature and AP Literature and Composition
  • Has taught in Rockdale and Putnam County

Starr’s Mill welcomes English teacher Chris Salas to the Panther family. She replaces previous teacher Tara Burnette and will be teaching 9th and 11th grade. Salas has been teaching for 18 years.

“I’m a big believer that education matters, whoever you are, wherever you’re going and whatever your life goals are,” Salas said. “Each student deserves their opportunity to be the best version of themselves. And the thing that I love about teaching is that I get to be a part of that journey.”

In 2023, Salas and her family relocated to north Georgia. Then a few months after she settled in at her new school, her husband found out that his job was moving to Mexico. They declined the transfer and he found employment back in Peachtree City.

She did not think that she would be able to find a teaching job in the middle of the school, but luckily Starr’s Mill had opened up the doors for her. This semester Salas will be teaching one period of 11th grade English and three periods of 9th grade English.

“Everyone here has made me feel very welcomed. The kids have been nice. It’s been a good transition,” Salas said. “It’s definitely difficult because you’re trying to come in and get to know everyone while also planning curriculum and putting everything together, and trying to figure out what students know and where we need to be.”

When Salas is not teaching she is spending time with her family, doing a lot of activities outside with her three young boys and spending time with her dog as well.

Two interesting fact about Salas is that she speaks Spanish fluently and when she was in college she ended up staying with a tribe of indigenous people for about a month.
