Honors Night lauds students’ accomplishments

May is the month for honors,  so on the first Monday of the month, students of all grade levels gathered with their parents in the Willie Duke Auditorium to celebrate a night of honors and scholarships.

The night began with a number of seniors receiving local scholarships. Clothes Less Traveled awarded Parker Henry $5,000 and Brooke Wade $3,000. The Coweta-Fayette gave the EMC Melissa Segars Memorial Scholarship  to Lucille Wang. Four students won the Long Orthodontic Scholarship:  Taylor Brunskole, Connor Childers, Josh Warren and Taylor Haney.

The Peachtree City Running Club-Ronnie Godwin Scholarship was given to Clayton Bollen, Emily Sims, Seraiah Stuart and Josh Warren. Laura Landis was the recipient of the World Gym Gloria Sherman Scholarship. The National BETA Club Scholarship went to Landis and Henry.

The Panther Athletic Booster Club awarded Taylor Brunskole, Cody Clements, Ashley Evert and Olivia Krug their scholarship. The PTSO Scholarship went to seniors Mira Bookman, Peyton Cleary and Brooke Underwood.

College scholarships came next. Scholarships for Auburn University went to Hayes Bloomsmith, Jack Corrigan, Hayden Faith, Natalie Free, Taylor Haney, Zebulon Page, and Connor Poole. Eniyah Willingham received a scholarship from Bard College; Auren Arevalo and Mariah Blanks, University of Alabama; Elliott Bauer, Caroline Kelly and Kale Walker, Mississippi State University.

Military scholarships were awarded to three seniors. The GMF Scholarship/ Minuteman Award was given to Jake Mizell, the NROTC Scholarship to Kurt Wenske and the AFROTC Scholarship to Andrew Hubbard.

Some students received special recognition. The Key Club Academic and Service Award went to Katie Anderson, and the AJC Cup Award to Emma Wernecke. Mitch Pattison received the Mowell Cup Award, and the Ray Kroc Youth Achievement Award was given to Ana Bankey.

Several departments recognized students for their dedication and achievement. Brooke Nevins won the Outstanding FACS/FCCLA Student Award; Sana Panjwani, Outstanding Healthcare Science Student; Morgan Knowlton, Microsoft IT Academy Student; Emily Sinclair, Brooke Underwood and Emma Wernecke, Outstanding Yearbook Students; Tatiana Diaz, Outstanding Reading Student; Dana Gould, Outstanding Freshman CP English; Makira Walton, Outstanding Freshman Gifted English; Micah Stuart, Outstanding Sophomore College Prep English; Aubrey Bennett, Outstanding Sophomore Gifted English; Emily Louis, Outstanding Junior College Prep English; Dhruva Jandhyala, Outstanding Junior AP English; Amanda Burks, Outstanding Senior College Prep English; Kelly O’Shaughnessy, Outstanding AP Literature; Logan Smith, Perfect Score-Graduation Writing Test; Ashton Long, Outstanding Creative Writing Student; Erin Schilling, Yuri-Grace Ohashi, Faith Terry, Jack Fletcher, Taylor Milligan, Brayden Jenks, Colin Lohman, Emma Smith, and Dylan Hynson, Outstanding Journalism Students.

The Fine Arts Department recognized the following students. The Outstanding Freshman Art was awarded to Paige Chechele, the Outstanding Sophomore Art Student to Cassidy Powell, the Outstanding Junior Art student went to Victoria Alvarez, and the Outstanding Senior Art Student to Zach Hart. There were also awards for Senior Chorus, which went to Camille Horne, and AP Art History, Zach Hart.

The Foreign Language Department honored students from the Spanish, French and German classes. The Spanish awards went to Tim Hahn for Spanish I, Taylor Milligan for Spanish II, Shaaz Peerani for Spanish III, Madeline Beatty for Spanish IV, and Caitlin Henderson for AP Spanish. French awards went to Sabrina Greco for French I, Aubrey Bennett for French II, Madeline Scheinost for French III, and Emily Elling for French IV. German awards went to Marleena Tamminen for German I, Madison Hagen for German II, Michael Egan for German III, and William Porter for German IV.

In the Math Department, Claire Kallina received the award for Coordinate Algebra; Allison Fisher, Analytic Geometry; Chase Lance, Advanced Algebra; Colin Kelly, Accelerated Coordinate Algebra/Analytic Geometry; Gaku Matsumoto, Accelerated Analytic Geometry/Advanced Algebra; Joshua Tysor, Accelerated Precalculus; Will Evans, AP Statistics; and Ricky Macke, AP Calculus.

Kathryn Harper and Cole Elrod received awards for Outstanding Physical Education Student.

Biology awards were given to Dana Gould for College Prep Biology, Erin Rathje for Gifted Biology and Madeline Beatty for AP Biology. Chemistry awards went to Jacob Arnold for College Prep Chemistry, Will Evans for Gifted Chemistry, and Nick Martin for AP Chemistry. Physics awards went to Michael Runyan for STEM Physics, Emily Louis for Conceptual Physics, Morgan Knowlton for AP Physics I and Tongbo Zhao for AP Physics C.  Blake Abraham received an award for Earth Systems, Sarah Flanders for Environmental Science, Mira Bookman for AP Environmental Science, and Jennifer Kurtz for Anatomy. Lucille Wang received an award for Science Olympiad.

The Outstanding World History Student Award went to Patrick Kelly, and the Outstanding AP World History Student to Jake Odom. The Outstanding U.S. History Student went to Joshua Harrison, and the Outstanding Government Student, Carolyn Anderson. The Outstanding Economics Student was given to Chayla Park. Caitlin Henderson was named the Outstanding AP European History Student, and Joshua Abrams took home the Outstanding AP Government Student. Jake Mizell received the Outstanding AP Macroeconomics Award. The Outstanding AP Human Geography student was Colin Kelly,  and Mira Bookman, the Outstanding AP Psychology student.

The Academic Team was recognized for its members’ accomplishments. The team consists of Carolyn Anderson, Hayes Bloomsmith, Mira Bookman, Connor Childers, Cody Clements, Anne Rentz, Madeline Beatty, Matthew Chrzanowski, Ricky Macke, Gunita Rahman, Faith Terry, Devin Lohman, Chau Luu, Quynn Phan, Natalie Thomas, Joshua Tysor and Alex Casado.

The Varsity and JV Math Teams were also recognized. The Varsity team consists of Payton Avery, Derek Camacho, Madeleine Childress, Maria Curry, MasAnne Fulmer, Jocelyn Gao, Colton Hazelton, Kevin Hilinski, Genie Horne, Brayden Jenks and Hannah Lachmayr. Junhan Lee, Ricky Macke, Yuri-Grace Ohashi, Gunjan Patel, Joshua Tysor and Tongbo Zhao make up the JV team.

Sophomore Spencer Dawson received the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award and senior Cody Clements and Alex Casado received the Georgia Scholar award.

The Beta Club officers for the 2015-2016 school year were also announced. They are Maddie Beatty, president; Yuri-Grace Ohashi, vice president; Christie Shanahan, treasurer, and Alexis Halm, secretary.

The night ended with the announcement of the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2015. Emma Wernecke received the title of Valedictorian and Cody Clements was announced as the salutatorian.
