Drama teacher Lauren Kuykendall is currently reading “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” by Kate DiCamillo.

“[The book] is actually meant for children, but there is a lot in it that you can identify with as an adult,” Kuykendall said. “There is also a really pretty play adaptation.”

The well-known children’s book follows a stuffed rabbit who travels across the world to find his owner after he is suddenly separated. Through his struggles, the rabbit discovers what it truly means to love someone.

“My mom used to read the book to me when I was a kid,” Kuykendall said. “We are in the season of trying to pick shows for next year, so I am doing a lot of reading, and I chose to read this specific book because I used to love it as a kid.”

Books similar to “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane” include “The Tale of Despereaux,” which is also written by the same author.

Kate DiCamillo is an American children’s fiction author. Throughout her career, she has published over 25 novels, including her best-known novel, “Because of Winn-Dixie.” Her books commonly confront themes of loss, but the protagonists’ find joy in their grief.

“It is really neat to see through the eyes of a stuffed animal, the people around you growing up and going through things,” Kuykendall said. “It really offers a different point of view.”
