What did you focus on at 15 years old? It could have been getting accustomed to high school and looking for part-time jobs, but for Maddox Batson it is becoming the next top country artist.
Maddox Batson is a 15-year-old Nashville singer-songwriter, gaining fame from his Zach Bryan and Red Clay Strays covers. His singles “Tears in the River” and “I Wanna Know” went viral on TikTok, opening the doors for him to get his footing in the music world.
My music taste is the complete opposite of country. I love heavy tunes, with fast lyrics and memorable melodies, and listening to “Girl in Green” was a complete switch-up. While it is not my main music taste, as I am not the biggest fan of country, I do believe that it is a fantastic song for someone who does enjoy the country genre.
Batson has talked in interviews about being able to play piano, guitar, and mandolin. In “Girl in Green,” the instruments layer in a way that, without vocals, you would still know the song is a love song. The vocals explore Batson’s thought process as he finds this girl, and she begins to appear in his mind repeatedly.
Batson’s lyrics are repetitive but memorable. It paints a picture in the listener’s mind: a girl in green, a color that is hard to ignore. His music reflects that as well, as his music fits into the country genre, but the pop aspects of it stand out compared to the usual songs we are used to hearing.
“Girl in Green” is a part of Batson’s first EP, “First Dance.” The other songs on the EP keep the same theme as “Girl in Green,” and the lyrics and rhythm are quite repetitive. This is not necessarily a bad thing, though, as it makes the songs all the more catchy.
If you are looking to get into country music or have been a long-time fan, this song is for you. I cannot wait to see where Batson takes his music, and where it will take him in return.
