“Biking” by Frank Ocean, Jay-Z, and Tyler The Creator, released in 2017, has a great beat and a mellow sound but also does something very interesting in its lyrics called a triple entendre.

The original version of this song is only Frank Ocean but when you add the genius of Tyler The Creator and Jay-Z, this song executes three triple entendres with three different artists.

A triple entendre is a figure of speech where in one line there are three different meanings. One is typically more obvious that the others and you have to really pay attention to be able to catch the others.

The song starts off with a slow piano and Jay-Z’s vocals beginning with the first triple entendre where he says, “Handlebars like a Xanax.” He is referencing the handlebars on a bike, the bar shape of Xanax pills, and his ability to handle rap bars.

The second triple entendre is when Frank Ocean says, “I got the grip like a handle.” Here he refers to the grips on a bike’s handlebars, his money (“grip” tends to be slang for money), which ties into one of the last lines talking about money, and control (“grip” also can mean keep something under control). This also ties into another one of his previous lines where he talks about God giving the ability to handle things.

The third triple entendre comes from Tyler The Creator where he says, “Alcoholic the way I handle the bar,” referencing, like Jay-Z, his ability to handle rap bars, the handlebars on a bike, and finally bars where alcohol is served.

This song has many interesting sounds, with echoes of their voices, a synth-type noise, and the continuing piano. Frank Ocean is known for making music like this in his album “Blonde” where the vibe is super-chill and relaxing with some incredible lyrics.
