Are you a fan of unique music videos and concept albums? Are you looking for a new pop artist to listen to? Then you start by listening to the song “Carousel” by Melanie Martinez, released in 2014.

“Carousel,” the fourth track on the “Crybaby” album, is about one-sided love and takes on the point of view of a person who has fallen in love with another, but feels like they can never move forward in the relationship.

The lyrics along with the music video reference a carousel ride, symbolizing chasing a person in a relationship but never being able to reach them, just as a horse on a carousel continues to ride in constant circles.

Crybaby is constantly trying to voice her feelings to Johnny who is one of the characters in the storyline, but the relationship seems to continue in a never-ending cycle or a carousel of emotions.

Melanie Martinez is a musical artist most renowned for her unique songs and visuals which accompany them. Another unique feature of her music is that each album she has created revolves around a character named Crybaby and follows her story. She includes sensitive topics in her songs which typically are not featured in other music.

Carousel was originally released on Melanie’s first EP, “Dollhouse,” in 2014, and was featured in the trailer for the fourth season of “American Horror Story.”  It was later included in her debut album “Crybaby.”

You can listen to “Carousel” by Melanie Martinez on all streaming platforms, and watch the music video on YouTube.
