“What I Got” by Sublime spreads the message that life is about finding the good and being grateful for it, even when times are rough. This song was released in 1996 and is the fifth song on Sublime”s album “Sublime.”

One’s outlook on life determines how one lives it. You could think of all the negative sides, everything that is dragging you down. Or you could think of all the things you are living for and how you get to do the things you love.

Life is about finding happiness and contentment in the present moment, even when times get tough. This is the message in the song “What I Got” by Sublime.

Lead singer Brad Nowell sings, “Well, life is too short, so love the one you got/ ‘Cause you might get run over, or you might get shot/ Never start no static, I just get it off my chest/ Never had to battle with no bulletproof vest.” Life could be much worse, so be grateful that you are even alive and doing well. Be grateful that you have loved ones and be grateful that you are able to love others.

Not only are the lyrics catchy, but so is the upbeat tempo. You just cannot help but nod your head to the beat while listening to this song.

Nowell emphasizes the importance of love when he also sings, “Love is what I got, it’s within my reach.” This line really shows the idea that true happiness can be found in the connections and relationships we have in our lives.

The punk rock band with a twist of reggae formed in 1988 and rose to fame in the mid ‘90s. After Sublime’s first two albums were released “40 oz. to Freedom” and “Robbin’ the Hood” they became slightly known around the United States. However, the third and final album “Sublime” was released two months after Nowell’s death. “Sublime” quickly rose to fame claiming No. 13 on the Billboard 200.

The song “What I Got” remained the band’s No. 1 hit single until it was overtaken by “Santeria.” With over 17 million albums sold worldwide, Sublime is one of the most influential and successful ska-punk bands of all time.

Through Sublime’s song “What I Got” Nowell shares his personal message of appreciating what you have in life and not taking things for granted.

Other popular songs besides “What I Got” on the album “Sublime” include “Santeria,” “Caress Me Down,” and “Doin’ Time.” These songs can be found on all streaming platforms.
