Past relationships, as much as you can get over them, can always still linger in your mind with memories that remind you of them. These feelings of fatigue are displayed with Christmas cheer in Sabrina Carpenter’s song “is it new years yet?”
The first verse of the song begins with Carpenter doing the standard complaining of the Christmas season saying, “The songs are catchy, but they’re overplayed / My relatives always know what to say to piss me off.” The negativity of the lyrics provide a stark contrast between the cheerful beat.
Using different sounds of Christmas bells and snapping sounds really give the vibe of Christmas time.
The other verses discuss more of the backstory of why she has such a hatred for the holiday season where she says, “December is a prison / It just makes me miss him.” The rest of the song begins with Carpenter begging Santa to help her and make everything better, along with her asking why he has such a hatred for her and her relationships.
“Fruitcake” is an EP released by Carpenter on November 17, 2023. The title of the EP represents the Christmas spirit floating throughout the five songs.
Carpenter got her start as an actor of the Disney show “Girl Meets World” from 2014-2017. While acting she also began recording music. She released her first album “Eyes Wide Open” on April 14, 2015.
While having small success here and there, Carpenter’s music career did not really skyrocket until the release of her fifth album “emails I can’t send.” With her release of “Espresso” and her newest album “Short n’ Sweet” earlier this year, Carpenter has officially cemented herself as a pop icon.
“is it new years yet” is a festive yet pessimistic look at the holiday season, and is great if you do not want to listen to the stereotypical Christmas song.
