New tennis courts on their way

Starr’s Mill tennis has earned a combined 20 region titles. The girls team has made it to the state playoffs 18 times and advanced to the state semifinals three times, while the boys have made it to playoffs 17 times and also advanced to the state semifinals three times.

The teams will now have a place of their own on campus rather than practicing and competing in various places around the county.

We’re going to have to shift some practice fields around.”

— Athletic Director Shane Ratliff

“It would be fabulous if we had our own facility where we can schedule practices when we want,” head coach Amy Evert said.

Courts were approved about a month ago, but groundbreaking is currently waiting on permits.

The new tennis courts will be placed on the field across from the bus loop. This will be replacing the marching band and girls lacrosse practice field.

“They’re going to move the band tower to the other field which is going to take a little time to do that,” Athletic Director Shane Ratliff said. “We’re going to have to shift some practice fields around.”

The building of the tennis courts is funded by the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Six tennis courts will be built.

Previously, the tennis team would practice at the Whitewater subdivision courts. They would host home matches at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.

“Transportation is always an issue,” Evert said. “We can’t get buses very easily so we all have to provide our own transportation.”

Once construction begins, the project should take six to eight weeks to complete.
