“We had a really good season at both levels of play,” Close said. “I’m really proud of them.”

The biggest concern for Close as the teams head to state is the new environment of the next competition. The season’s last competition is in person and mirrors pre-COVID practices.

Previously, students competed in Close’s classroom as a collaborative effort. Given 60 minutes, the entire team answered 100 questions on the Promethean board and then sent in their results.

“For the state championship, we will be playing with buzzers with one player having to buzz in and answer with no collaboration on the toss up questions,” Close said. “So, it’s higher pressure on the individual players.”

Some upperclassmen have previous experience with this format of competitions, so there will be some peer guidance.

The state competition will be held in person at Appalachee High School on February 26.
