Sophomores Sanaya Patel and Zach Dorrough placed as Quarterfinalists at the 1st 2nd Year State tournament with a record of 4-3. The Starr’s Mill debate team will end its season at the GFCA varsity state tournament.

First year Public Forum debaters competed at the GFCA 1st/2nd year state tournament this past weekend at Carrollton High School.

“I think we’ve improved a lot and for first years,” junior Duke Harper said. “I think we did pretty well.”

Sophomores Logan Thompson and Zoe Karen lost to Valdosta after making it to the first elimination round. Sophomore Luciana Salas and junior Duke Harper made it to eliminations as well, yet both were defeated by Carrollton.

Sophomores Sanaya Patel and Zach Dorrough finished as quarter-finalists as they took on and were defeated by Marist High School.

The team managed to bring home a speaker award as sophomore Zoe Karen placed fourth in speakers overall.

“The team could definitely work on improving the organization of their speeches and being more straightforward,” Harper said.

The end of the state tournament marked the end of the season for the novice team.

Starr’s Mill’s varsity public forum debaters will end the debate season at the GFCA varsity State tournament at Marist High School on February 9-10.
