With recent award events and celebrity appearances, the fashion sense has shown a new sense of style. Through a lack of clothing, increase in sheer fabric, and an attempt at new styles, celebrities need to start presenting themselves with more modesty.
At the 2026 Grammys, Chappell Roan wore an extremely revealing outfit made out of a fine material which got a lot of attention. With the Grammys being broadcast on major TV programs, people of all ages were exposed to her provocative style.
Similarly, many other celebrities have been debuting their exotic styles. Emma Corrin, an English actress, has recently been wearing sheer dresses and see-through fabrics. Another multi-talented artist, Teyana Taylor, has been showing up to big events in extremely low-cut, sheer, and unique outfits.
Different music creators, like Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift, also have shown their lack of modesty. Although they are widely renowned artists that are extremely talented, it is still important for them to portray decency in their fashion. Performing in bodysuits and lacey lingerie–like outfits does not give them a good look, especially with such a young demographic that they are performing for.
With such an important media presence, it is crucial for celebrities to present themselves in a mature way. Paparazzi documents every movement of a famous celebrity. The type of publicity that a person gets for a crazy outfit marks their character on social media for a long time. Humiliating trends are made out of them, which is not the kind of trademark a person should want.
Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, a 1990s style icon, was known for her simple and chic fashion. She was a Calvin Klein publicist but had a closet full of basics that allowed for endless outfit combinations. She went against the maximalism that the ‘90s were known for with celebrities like Carrie Bradshaw and Madonna.
Kate Middleton, a member of the royal family, shows extreme sincerity by only wearing knee-length hem lines and conservative necklines. She resembles peak royalty, which many long for her simplicity in fashion.
Though Kate is modest, it is unrealistic for American celebrities to follow those strict guidelines, but it is not acceptable for famous people to be as revealing as they currently are. All lace outfits, low cut necklines, and just an overall lack of clothing should not be debuted on a red carpet. They are expected to present themselves with elegance and portray a high-class demeanor with nobility. Cheeky clothing gives off a tacky and cheap persona.
Celebrities can have their trademark particular while staying modest. People often think that modesty means minimalism, but someone can portray a sense of decency while having a maximalist style.
Redefining fashion with elegance, sophistication, and conservativity rather than what fashion is classified as, is a much needed change. Not only to appeal to their younger crowds that they influence, but also to fit the social class standard that they hold.
Celebrities making such revealing choices in their outfits does not create a good look on their character. Although fashion might be a way for them to express their art, it is not an excuse to wear that clothing at these broadcast events and present themselves in such a way.
“Less is more” in fashion. Wearing a tasteful and flattering outfit leaves a much more positive mark on their characters than trying to make a statement through a provocative outfit. Celebrities need to start showing a sense of modesty when attending highly publicized events.
