Assistant Principal Andrea Freeman read “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates” by Wes Moore.

“The book talks about Wes Moore one’s life and it also talks about Wes Moore two’s life and how different their lives are even though they are essentially born in the same city, the same day, and with the same name,” Freeman said. “They actually meet after [Wes Moore one] does the research.”

Moore published the book in 2010 as a New York Times Bestseller and later released the biography “Discovering Wes Moore” in 2012.

“I started rereading it because [Wes Moore one] was actually just elected [last week] to be the governor of Maryland,” Freeman said. “[The second Wes Moore’s] neighborhood was poor and it kind of created the environment for him to make some poor life decisions.”

Wes Moore two was not elected governor of Maryland, but he ends up turning his life around and getting away from the criminal environment.

“The book asks the reader essentially to identify some of the areas where Wes Moore two made bad decisions,” Freeman said. “But then some of it is also what his environment is like.”

Freeman started reading the book for the first time in 2011 in a book club. This was when she first became a teacher, which helped her to inspire kids who had not been born under the best circumstances.

“I remember how the book made me feel and how inspired it made me and I wanted to get that inspiration again,” Freeman said. “How much is it based off of what you personally do and how much is it based off of the environment in what you do?”

Freeman recommends the book because it discusses the choices you make in life as well as some choices that already have been made for you.
