Junior Brooke Kalen recently finished reading “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

“I liked that the book was easy to read,” Kalen said. “There was drama in all the chapters, which makes it entertaining to read.”
The book, narrated by character Nick Carraway, follows his life as he lives around old and new money people. Carraway is particularly interested in the mysterious life of Jay Gatsby and his love interest, Daisy Buchanan.
“I chose this book because it was required for our AP Lang class to read as a part of our curriculum,” Kalen said.
Fitzgerald was an American author during the Jazz Age who commonly wrote about themes of wealth, love, and the American Dream. His other works include “This Side of Paradise,” “The Beautiful and the Damned,” and “Tender is the Night.”
“I would recommend this book to other high school students, because they would find the drama in the book interesting,” Kalen said. “It’s a friendly book for anyone at that age to read.”
The overall theme of the book is the corruption and unreachable nature of the American Dream.
