Senior Ella Campbell recently watched Disney’s animated film “Soul.”
“Soul” follows a middle school teacher, Joe Gardner, working to become a pianist. When he falls into a manhole after a jazz gig, Gardner has to find himself to get his soul back from the Great Before.
The voices of “Soul” are brought to life by actors like Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, and Richard Ayoade. The 3D-animated film was directed by Pete Docter and co-directed by Kemp Powers.
What did you enjoy about this film?
“I enjoyed the musical aspects of the film,” Campbell said. “It focused on wanting something your whole life and dealing with the disappointment of it not being exactly what you wanted.”
What motivated you to watch this film?
“I’ve just been meaning to watch it for a while,” Campbell said. “I was sick and had a day at home, so I just decided to watch it.”
What was the most memorable part of this film?
“When the main character played the piano with the jazz band at the end of the movie,” Campbell said. “It was just really good music, and it was animated really well.”
How is this film different from others that you have watched?
“It explored themes that I haven’t seen explored in anything I’ve watched, like losing yourself in your passions and them becoming an obsession,” Campbell said.
What other films similar to this one would you recommend?
“‘Whiplash’,” Campbell said.
