Varsity boys basketball head coach and history teacher Joshua Reeves’ favorite song is “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens.

“Cat Stevens is maybe one of the best vocalists of all time,” Reeves said. “He’s a phenomenal singer, and [the song has] a great message.”

“Father and Son” is a slower song about the relationship between a father and son. In the song, the son is trying to part ways with his father to find his destiny, and his father is having a hard time letting him go.

Stevens took the name Yusuf Islam in 1978 and kept his stage name as Cat Stevens after converting to Islam the year prior. “Father and Son” is part of Stevens’ 1970 album “Tea for the Tillerman.” Throughout his career, Stevens has sold over 23 million albums, his most popular being a compilation of greatest hits which sold over 5 million copies.

“It’s smooth,” Reeves said. “It’s very comforting music. If you’re one of those people who kind of needs to sit in the chair and prop your feet up and chill out then you would like Cat Stevens.”

“Father and Son” is available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music.
