Senior Sam Gladden is currently listening to “The Enemy” by Andrew Belle.
“I can empathize with it,” Gladden said. “It’s just so good.”
“The Enemy” is an alternative/indie/folk song that focuses on love, loss, and acceptance. The singer begins the song with a description of feeling lost in his own mind. He continues by introducing a relationship he has with someone important in his life but explains that this person would be better off without him. The lyrics construct the idea of finding oneself in a place of chaotic darkness and wishing not to taint others with the same feelings.
Andrew Belle sings, “Don’t try to follow me/ I would hold you down if I could/ make you the enemy/ I would let you down.” This chorus in particular carries the message in a consistent, repeating rhyme. The vocals and general ambiance of the music have the power to significantly impact the listener.
“It ties in the whole idea of trying to push somebody away from you because you are trying to protect them,” Gladden said.
“The Enemy” was released in Andrew Belle’s album “Black Bear” in August of 2013. Currently, the song has over 42 million streams on Spotify. The album is filled with autobiographical songs like “The Enemy” that discuss themes of navigating personal relationships.
