“Get Him Back!” by Olivia Rodrigo shows the relationship of an ex who, even though she loved and misses, does not miss his toxic traits. The song was released on the album “GUTS” on September 8, 2023 by Geffen Records.

Rich, cocky, narcissistic, all of these words seem like they could be used to describe a typical frat bro, but they can also be used to describe the boy Olivia Rodrigo pictured in her song “Get Him Back!” from her new album “GUTS.”

“Get Him Back!” is the eighth song out of 12 on the album. “Get Him Back!” details an old relationship with a not-so-stellar guy. She also talks about her dilemma of wanting him back for his fun lifestyle but also recognizing his toxic behaviors.

Rodrigo’s lyrics show this by saying, “But he was so much fun, and he had such weird friends/he would take us out to parties and the night would never end.” She also says, “So I miss him some nights when I’m feeling depressed/’til I remember he made a pass on my friend.” In the chorus, Rodrigo repeats, “I wanna get him back.” This line has a double meaning. She wants to get him back because she misses him, but she also wants him back to claim her vengeance.

Olivia Rodrigo initially rose to fame starring in the Disney+ exclusive “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” and then became an international success with her debut album “Sour.” The shift from “Sour” to “GUTS” is like a butterfly, where Rodrigo evolved.

“Sour” focuses on remorse and makes the listener feel sympathetic for her, the album has more sad tracks, but “GUTS” has Rodrigo in a new vengeful light with the problems her ex has caused and has more of a ‘90s grunge rock sound.

“Get Him Back!” was released on September 8, 2023, alongside “GUTS.” “GUTS” opened with 300,000 sales and has almost 200 million streams.

You can listen to “Get Him Back!” on Spotify and Apple Music.
