“Tongue Tied” by GROUPLOVE discusses the feelings of young love, friendship, and childhood nostalgia. The song is an upbeat tune featuring multiple instruments and voices making the song even more addicting each time you listen.

It starts with an upbeat crescendo and features voices yelling “whoo” before starting with the iconic first lyrics “take me to your best friend’s house.” This expresses the power of friendship and is one of the two most common verse starters along with “don’t leave me tongue tied” expressing the feeling of young love no one wants to go away. The song is classified as indie-pop but also features parts that have synth or punk undertones to add to its diversity.
The bridge happens about midway through the song and is sung by Hannah Hooper, the band’s pianist and vocalist. Adding this female voice into a mostly male song is important because it adds the perspective of love and friendship while also calming the song down by shifting from shouting male voices to a soft, melodic voice.
Although the song was released in 2011, it is still consistently the group’s most popular song and is featured on their debut album “Never Trust a Happy Song.” Some of their other popular songs include “Ways to Go,” “Colours,” and “Itchin’ on a Photograph.”
I chose this song because it is a very nostalgic, joyful song that feels like summer and puts me in a good mood no matter what. Fun fact: This was the Starr’s Mill Class of 2024 graduation song!
