Diane Ruane is this month’s recipient of the Golden Apple. She was nominated by English teacher Kelly Corallo, who felt that Ruane deserved recognition for her commendable work as a teacher and peer. 

“I know how hard she works with her students,” Corallo said. “They always appreciate how much she knows about her subject and how much she loves teaching it.”

As a teacher in the social studies department, Ruane’s approach to teaching is largely about showing her students how to find connections between history and current events. She often relates studies in the classroom to what is happening in real life, so that students gain an in-depth understanding of how U.S. history and government are shaped. 

“I have a passion for watching people understand kind of a bigger picture of what’s going on,” Ruane said. 

Growing up with a parent in the military, Ruane frequently moved when she was young. She attended James Robinson Secondary School, and afterwards, graduated from the University of Virginia. After joining the military, and later earning her teaching degree from the University of West Georgia, she went on to earn her Master’s degree in history and education. 

Currently, Ruane teaches both U.S. History and AP Government. She enjoys reading in her spare time, and has a passion for helping others to reach their full potential and succeed. 

“I like to see people grow into who they want to be,” Ruane said. 

Ruane receives $100 from Farmers Insurance to spend on curriculum or instruction. She plans on using the money for online learning tools this school year. She also receives a free large pizza from Buck’s Pizza, a gift certificate to Lisa’s Creperie in Senoia, and a free haircut from Mane Hair in Peachtree City.
