For the second year in a row, Starr’s Mill has been awarded the Region 4 Director’s Cup for athletic excellence.

Athletic Director Mik Davis has to make more room in the glass trophy showcase in the front office. For the second year in a row, SMHS has won the Class AAAAA Region 3 Georgia Athletic Director Association’s Director’s Cup .

Schools’ athletic teams acculate points throughtout the school year based on how they finish in their regional rankings. Schools are awarded 100 points for first place, 90 points for second, and 85 points for finishing third.

“This award is a reflection of our athletes and coaches,” Davis said. “I feel fortunate to be at such a good school with such good sports programs.”  Last year the boys’ athletic program finished seventh and the girls’ athletic program finished eighth in the region.

In the state rankings for the Director’s Cup, Starr’s Mill is ranked fifth out of 71 schools with 525 points. The competition ends after the baseball state championships conclude on May 25. Alatoona is currently in first place with 571.

“We have had a good year so far in all the sports,” Davis said. “There are still several teams in strong competition to win a state championship this year.”  The tennis and golf teams are still involved in state playoffs as are the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams.

Right now, boys’ and girls’ tennis teams, boys’ golf, and baseball are all ranked first in their state playoff brackets. The boys’ soccer team is ranked second and the girls’ team is fourth. The track and field team sent five boys to the state meet.  They are competing today and tomorrow, and the girls’ team will send three athletes to their competition  May 9-11.
