Junior Jenna Currin, one of four Lady Panthers selected for the DiVarsity All-Star game, heads the ball away from defenders in SMHS’s 3-1 loss to Whitewater that ended their playoff run.

Four members of the Lady Panthers’ 2013 varsity soccer team and their coach received All-Star honors on Monday, May 10.

Head coach John Bowen, along with juniors Rachel Catlett, Jenna Currin, and sophomore Paige Betsill attended the All-Star games on Sunday, May 19 at Sprayberry High School.  Junior captain Sarah Yoss was also honored but could not attend because of previous commitments.

“I’m glad I got to play with some of the best high school players in the state,” Currin said. “It was  a great experience.”

The games were sponsored by DiVarsity, a sports news source for all GHSA schools that started accepting nominations for All-Star rosters as early as April 15.  Players ane nominated by their coaches and athletic directors. Coach nominations went through a similar process. DiVarsity directors reviewed the applications and  filled the roster slots. They also selected a group of alternates.

“I am very honored to be chosen for the games,” Catlett said. “With so many good players, it was fun to play.”

The four games included two squads, one with AA and AAAAA players combined, and the other with A, AAA, AAAA, and AAAAAA players.

At halftime, DiVarsity presented awards to players honoring them for their regular-season achievements.

Bown  coached the blue team for the AA and AAAAA squad. He said he felt the experience was well deserved for his girls and something to be proud of to cap off their 16-6 season.  The Lady Panthers ended their season with a 3-1 loss to rival Whitewater in the Final Four of the GHSA Class AAAAA State Tournament.
