When the girls arrived to play Cambridge at the tennis state AAAAA title match, they looked ready to repeat last year’s championship performance. The boys’ team needed a victory against Lakeside Evans to win its second championship in the last three years. However, it was not meant to be. Both teams finished as state runner-up.

For the girls, senior Caroline Kelly won both her matches by a score of 3-2 and 6-2. Next up was freshman Elena Werneke, who also won 6-2 and tied 1-1. Senior Rachael Williams lost her match. A previous ankle injury flared up while she was playing.  “My ankle has been hurting for months,” Williams said. “I still cheered my team on despite the injury.”  In a doubles match,  juniors Mary Lloyd and Megan Beck lost 6-1 and 6-3, resulting in the girls’ loss 3-0 in match play.

In the boys’ first singles match, junior Dubie Dubin lost 6-3 and 6-0. Junior Max Yelken took the loss in the second match, 7-5 and 6-3. Freshman Davis Wall didn’t have the chance to finish his singles match because Lakeside had already won three matches.

Junior Shaaz Peerani and sophomore Cameron Kelly won the first doubles match, 6-1 and 6-3. “Lakeside was good,” Peerani said. “They were beatable, but good.”  In the second doubles match, sophomores Chris Sellers and Noah McPherson lost 6-3 and 6-4.

“We had a great season,” Caroline Kelly said. “Very proud to make it this far.”
