Lady Panthers shutout Spalding in scrimmage

Ben Barkley, Sports Editor

The Starr’s Mill girls’ varsity team started slow but picked up speed as the game progressed running away with a 6-0 win in their 2020 season opening scrimmage Friday night against Spalding.

Junior Sara Evans scored four goals and assisted one to pace the Panthers while splitting time between forward and midfield. Senior Quin Nowicki and sophomore Luzmila Moreira were the other goal scorers on the night with junior Sofia Varmeziar notching a hat trick of assists and sophomore Julia Shanahan adding another.

Junior Jacqueline Reardon and freshman Addison Smith combined on the shutout despite a light workload with just one save on the night.

The team begins their regular season tonight against region foe Riverdale at 12 Oaks Stadium in Lovejoy in a varsity doubleheader opener at 5 p.m. with the boys to follow at 7 p.m.

Come out and support your Panthers!
