Happy Halloween, Panthers! We finally made it through October. This year is flying right by. Before you go out to celebrate or trick-or-treat, make sure you check out this week’s KICs. This week we have Hurricane Melissa closing in on Jamaica, the government shutdown leading to a possible pause in federal food aid, a woman killed and left under a bridge, and Lieutenant General Joe McGee pushed from office.
– Hurricane Melissa closing in on a catastrophic landfall in Jamaica
Over the weekend, Hurricane Melissa intensified and turned into a Category 5 hurricane. The National Hurricane Center expects Melissa to make landfall Tuesday morning causing historically catastrophic damage.
The eye of the storm is 130 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica. Tropical storm conditions have already been ongoing in Jamaica while people are preparing for the big hit. The government ordered mandatory evacuations for many coastal communities on the island.
Cuba has also issued hurricane warnings for their eastern provinces. Tropical storm warnings have been issued in Haiti as well.
National – Government shutdown leading to possible pause in federal food aid
Food banks have started to prepare for a wave of people if federal food aids shut down. A rush has already swarmed because of the persisting government shutdown.
A church in Indianapolis had to accommodate twice the amount of people than they typically hold. The debit cards that are used to fund these aids are expected to shut down at the start of next month. Trump’s administration also says that the states that are temporarily covering the costs of the food aids will not be reimbursed.
Food banks have already seen a recent uprising, especially after COVID-19 and inflation spikes. They took a bigger toll after the administration cut costs on programs that provided more than $1 billion for schools and food banks.
State – Woman killed and left under a bridge
On October 4, 2025, a 34-year-old female’s body was found under a bridge in Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia. Police believe Tanisha Rivers, mother of two, was the possible homicide victim.
The location in which her body was found has raised concern considering traffic levels are low in the area. Rivers had been a victim of sex trafficking since the age of 13 and had been working to fix her life the last two years. Her effort to turn her life around was supported by her ex-boyfriend who she left in West Georgia.
Police are continuing the investigation to confirm Rivers’ cause of death. Investigation to see if the motive was because of her past is also underway.
Politics – Lieutenant General Joe McGee pushed from position in office
Lieutenant General Joe McGee, the former Director of Strategy, was pushed from his position after months of tension with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Sources also state that along with his frequent butting heads with Hegseth, he had frequent push back with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine.
During the previous administration McGee had been nominated to be appointed as the new director or Joint Staff but was not renominated during this administration. McGee butts heads with both Caine and Hegseth on topics ranging from conflicts between Russia and Ukraine to basic military operations in the Caribbean. The two often feel frustrated with McGee, believing that he is too slow to come to decisions.
Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell went on to give a statement about how grateful the Pentagon is for all the work General McGee has done over his 35 years there. A Joint Staff spokesperson made another statement commemorating General McGee’s work as well as expressing their regret on how the Lieutenant General’s retirement is being overshadowed by this controversy.
