Happy Friday, Panthers! This week, we went on a freeze warning and the temperature dropped tremendously. So while you are bundling up for the cold weather, take a look at this week’s KICs. We have a former French president released from prison, air travel recovering after the government shutdown, a loaded gun magazine found on a flight out of Atlanta, and the government reopening after the longest shutdown in US history.
World – Former French president will be released from prison pending appeal
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was recently granted early release from prison. The Paris Court of Appeal agreed to release Sarkozy early and place him under judicial supervision.
Sarkozy was convicted in September for conspiring to seek funding for his 2007 presidential campaign from Muammar el-Qaddafi. Sarkozy was the first former head of state to be jailed in more than half a century in France. This case has set off many debates in the country about fairness and judicial independence.
Sarkozy was the President of France from 2007 to 2012. While in prison, Sarkozy was placed in solitary confinement.
National – Air travel will be long to recover, even after government shutdown ends
Although the government shutdown is nearing a close, air travel will not calm until the following months and possible years. National airports must continue on the Federal Aviation Administration’s emergency order.
The order calls for 40 major US airports to reduce their flight capacity by 10%. It also calls for flights to be canceled seven days prior to takeoff. The rescheduling process for the passengers is very difficult.
Employees working during the shutdown will not immediately receive backpay, causing many to wait until returning to work. There have been 20-25 people retiring per day at the Washington National Airport.
State – Loaded gun magazine found on flight out of Atlanta
According to police, officers were called to the gate at 4:23 p.m. after a passenger found a loaded magazine. The magazine contained 10 hollowed out rounds and was found near seat 7A on Frontier Airlines flight A320 at Atlanta Airport.
The plane had arrived from Cincinnati and was about to make its return trip when the magazine was found. The magazine was reported as marked with the initials “K H.” Airport police are working with the Transportation Security Administration, the Department of Aviation, Homeland Security, Frontier Airlines, and Atlanta police K-9 to investigate the situation. The police searched the plane but no more evidence was found.
The flight was cleared and it departed at 7:56 p.m. The FBI was notified and the investigation remains ongoing.
Politics – Government reopens after longest shutdown in US history
On November 12, 2025, the government shutdown came to an end. This 43-day government shutdown was the longest lasting shutdown in US history.
During the shutdown, federal workers received no paycheck. Many federal food aid recipients and federal employees were impacted. The government agencies that are slowly reopening are only funded until further clarification on January 30, 2025.
After the end of the government shutdown, Delta CEO Ed Bastian addressed flight concerns regarding safety of passengers and reliability of flights with air traffic controller staff returning to normal. He concluded that by the weekend normal flight operations should continue with safety and efficiency.
