Senior captains Jonathan Parrish and Jake Schaper accept the second place trophy at the Chattahoochee River Invitational on the last the day of the two-day tournament in LaGrange.

The team lost to Alexander High from Douglasville. Because the Panthers lack a heavyweight wrestler, they had to forfeit that spot and gave up team points for the ranking. A heavyweight class is from 220 to 285 pounds.

More than half the team made it to the finals and three placed first in their individual weight classes, including Parrish, Schaper and senior Cory Carter. All 13 team members medaled in the tournament.

Several teams in the tournament are in the same area as SMHS and winning against them gives the Panthers an edge for better seeding in the Area Duals in January.

“We have a chance at winning the Area Duals this year,” coach Burt Waller said. So far, Starr’s Mill has beaten every team it has faced in its area.

The Panthers will travel to Charleston, S.C., to compete in a 64-team varsity-only Coastal Slam meet this weekend.
