Varsity girls soccer dominated in a win on Tuesday against the Griffin Bears, 10-0. The win keeps the team undefeated in region play.
Junior midfielder Avany Yeager scored the majority of the goals. At halftime, the score was 8-0 and junior Alexis King put in the 10th goal to end the game during the 2nd half.
Although the Panthers are undefeated in region, they are still listed second behind Harris County High School. Harris County took down Northside Columbus on Tuesday, 4-1.
“Our toughest games in the region look like Harris County and Northside Columbus again this year,” head coach John Bowen said. “Northside is ranked #5 in 4A Girls soccer this week. We will need to play well over all, be secure in the back and take our chances when they come.”
The Panthers won region last year, and are always looking to continue that. The girls play Harris County and Northside Columbus later in March, which will be a must-watch region match-up.
“We will have our first day Thursday where all 18 players on varsity are available as injuries and club tournaments have kept someone or multiple people out up until then,” Bowen said. “Everyone has stepped up and done a great job so far, but the results have gone our way. We have played well enough to earn more points but they just haven’t gone our way.”
On top of the win last night, many accomplishments are happening within the soccer team. Senior forward Kendra Ivaska scored her 100th goal as a Panther, and has committed to the University of Vermont to play D1 soccer. Yeager has also committed to Indiana University for D1 soccer.
With all the successes coming their way, people have to wonder about the future of the program. Seven seniors are leaving after this season, opening many spots on the starting roster next year. With that many seniors leaving, only 11 players will still be on the varsity soccer team.
“Seniors leave every year but we have had a lot of success with this class these four years. As always, we will look for 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th graders to fill those spots and build another team around new people,” Bowen said. “We will lose a lot of experience but there is talent waiting in the wings.”
The girls record is 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the region. The Lady Panthers play against St. Anne-Pacelli tonight at 6 p.m.
