Happy Friday, Panthers! This Sunday, we have the New England Patriots taking on the Seattle Seahawks for the Superbowl LX. We also have Bad Bunny performing the halftime show. While you are tuning in for the game, check out this week’s KICs. This week we have a Gaza-Egypt border reopening after being closed for two years, an 84-year-old woman taken from her home unwillingly, a long-time restaurant in Atlanta closing their doors, and Marco Rubio dropping one of his jobs while still juggling many others.
World – Gaza-Egypt border reopens after being closed for two years
Gaza’s only border with Egypt partially reopened on Monday morning after Israel closed it almost two years ago. This opening allowed a small number of Palestinians to leave the treacherous area.
The European Union is controlling the Rafah Crossing. Controlling this crossing is the final step for the first phase of the US-brokered ceasefire agreement. 150 Palestinians will be allowed to leave Gaza through the crossing each day.
There are steep prices and lengthy security processes the Palestinians have to go through. Only a few Palestinians are expected to be able to leave because of the financial contribution to exit the country.
National – 84-year-old woman taken from her home unwillingly
“TODAY” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, was last seen outside her home Saturday night. The co-anchor is asking for prayers in hopes for her mother’s safe return.
After failing to show up to church, the 84-year-old woman was reported missing from her home. The family searched her home and property. Officials believe she was taken “possibly in the middle of the night and that includes possible kidnapping or abduction.”
The co-anchor has repeatedly reached out to the public in requests for prayers. Law enforcement continues to investigate and follow any potential leads.
State – Longtime restaurant in Atlanta is closing their doors
After 13 years, Suite Food Lounge announced that they are closing their doors. They thanked the community for the support and how it makes the restaurant possible.
They did not specify when they are closing and did not give a reason for the closing. Many other restaurants across metro Atlanta have closed the last year. In late December of last year, Daddy D’z BBQ Joynt’s landlord was planning on selling the building because the cost had risen.
Other announced closures include Agave, Eats on Ponce, Dantanna’s in Buckhead, and Alma Cocina’s Buckhead location. In January of this year, Torchy Taco’s announced they were closing in West Midtown Atlanta.
Politics – Marco Rubio drops a job while still doing many more
After nearly a year working as archivist of the United States, Marco Rubio’s term has ended. Rubio’s term expired due to the rules placed by the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
US government records are preserved in the National Archives. Rubio was also the first person since Henry Kissinger to serve as secretary of state and security adviser at the same time. He also helped with the transition of Venezuela’s government after he played a key role in outing Nicolás Maduro.
James Byron, who will serve as temporary archivist, was picked by President Donald Trump. He will serve as head archivist on a day-to-day basis while the search for a full-time archivist continues.
